​Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong wanted the role of O-Lan in The Good Earth in 1937 but MGM cast Luise Rainer instead, a racist casting decision typical of Hollywood’s Golden Age. To remedy this, Williams Gamaker re-casts a Chinese performer and reconstructs the innovative SFX of this inspiring drama.
