Medium

With Medium I became interested in the boundary between being and acting, in particular the ‘performance’ of the medium.  For this piece I invited a performer to play the role of a medium in trance; she intensely stares directly at the camera, attempting not to blink.  The camera cuts from an extreme close-up to a wide frame, picking up the minute details of her gestures.

Shot digitally, I play with the idea of psychic phenomena by using an in-camera effect to create a shimmer in the image. The unstable video pixels add to the instability of her pose.
