Tele Vision juxtaposes two very different elements. The images were shot in a hotel room in Moscow, and show two short Discovery Channel documentaries projected onto the glass of the hotel window. One shows the production of peanut butter, the other the production of light bulbs. We hear the voice of a member of a Spiritualist Centre – a testimony in which the man claims a medium made contact with his deceased father. His language, conviction and the emotion in his voice clash and at times merge with the televised factory images.
With this work, my interest in documentary processes merge to create a new fictional space. The story of an American man recorded in Scotland and applied to imagery recorded in Russia offers a multi-layered approach to perception that must be considered when dealing with psychic phenomena. Tele Vision is an attempt to question our dependency on how stories are constructed (and manipulated) when our perceptual abilities are open to interpretation.
