CounterArchive: Fictional Healing collective filmmaking workshop facilitated by Michelle Williams Gamaker, Sabine Groenewegen, Ong Jo-Lene. Join a cohort of leading artistic practitioners in developing counter-narratives to the colonial myths surrounding the Malayan Emergency using processes that explore the potential of filmmaking as a form of reparation.
CounterArchive is a recurring program proposing alternatives to the record of official history through non-exhibition, process driven and collaborative activities. The first iteration in 2024 is anchored around CounterArchive: Fictional Healing, a collective filmmaking workshop facilitated by Michelle Williams Gamaker, Sabine Groenewegen, and Ong Jo-Lene. Utilising fiction and filmmaking, it aims to nurture the development of counter-narratives to established histories and colonial myths surrounding the Malayan Emergency. www.malaysiadesignarchive.org/counterarchive/

Michelle Williams Gamaker: Our Mountains Are Painted on Glass
Our Mountains Are Painted on Glass is an exhibition by Michelle Williams Gamaker, as part of our The Lives of Artists season. The Lives of Artists asks audiences what might be uncovered about ourselves when we listen to the testimony, histories, and stories of artists reflecting on their lives. www.thebluecoat.org.uk/whatson/michelle-williams-gamaker-our-mountains-are-painted-on-glass The Fictional Account: Keith Piper and Michelle Williams Gamaker in Conversation at Tate Britian25/4/2024 Join artists Keith Piper and Michelle Williams-Gamaker as they discuss the synergies between their films and practices and the role of archival research in forming new and alternative narratives. www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/piper-and-whistler/the-fictional-account Join us for a day of discussions inspired by Defiance: Fighting the Far Right – a new, landmark Channel 4 documentary series that examines the political and social struggles faced by Britain’s Asian community between 1976 and 1981. Across three panels, artists, filmmakers, historians and activists consider the issues, stories and contemporary resonances of the series.
A discussion on how artists from 1970s to today have created work exploring the events featured in Defiance: Fighting the Far Right and related histories. Chaired by the art historian Alice Correia, with contributions from the filmmaker Alia Syed, the artist, composer and musician Bishi and the artist Michelle Williams Gamaker. www.whitechapelgallery.org/events/defiance-channel-4-x-whitechapel-gallery/ Join us for an afternoon panel discussion centred around Williams Gamaker’s work and the cinematic history it responds to. The artist’s filmmaking practice is often in dialogue with film history: restaging scenes from Hollywood and British studio films to reveal their politically problematic, imperialist roots. Her work takes shape as fictional activism, retelling narratives and recasting characters so that they may get their revenge. This framework will be explored and expanded upon by Williams Gamaker with guests Prof Glyn Davis, Dr Catriona McAra and Dr Kulraj Phullar, whose research speaks to creative acts of rebellion and queering of narratives.
