In Conversation with Bella Marrin, Editor at Fieldnotes journal, to discuss my research into the countering of dominant narratives of imperial violence through filmmaking.
In the session we will watch extracts from my films The Bang Straws (2021) and The Silver Wave (2020) in which I’ve been developing my practice of ‘fictional activism’, an affective approach for the retelling of stories of oppression, which centres the depiction of marginalised brown characters engaged in fictionalised reenactments of social injustice. Michelle Williams Gamaker is an artist and filmmaker working with fictional activism to critique imperialist storytelling in 20th-century cinema. She was joint winner of Film London’s Jarman Award and recipient of the Stuart Croft Moving Image Award in 2020. Her film The Bang Straws (2021) screened at the 65th BFI LFF Short Film Award and at the Whitechapel London Open 2022. She won the Best Experimental Film Award at Aesthetica Short Film Festival. She is currently working on a new film Thieves a fantasy adventure and tale of fictional revenge. This session has been organised by editor, writer and A/WA member Bella Marrin. artworkassociation.org/fictional-activism-michelle-williams-gamaker-in-conversation-with-fieldnotes-journal/
